Is it really important to hire a Certified Contractor?

Why is it important to hire a certified Radon Contractor?  What does certifiied even mean?

Here is a prime example of what unknowing, untrained contractors can do.  This Radon Fan was installed in a sprinkler system valve box underground.  Although it is a creative installation, the fan probably quit working within weeks of being installed.  These fans are intended to be installed outside BUT NOT BURIED.  This fan should be installed vertically to keep water from condensation from collecting in the housing and causing the fan to short out.  Not to mention the water from the surrounding soil.  This was a very expensive install that never worked.  I am not sure if they even retested for the Radon level after installation.

This would not happen with a Certified Contractor!

The National Radon Proficiency Program was initially setup by the US EPA to set standards for Radon Testing and Mitigation.  The NRPP is now aministered by the National Environmental Health Association.  To become certified,  a contractor has to attend approved training for both testing and mitigation.  The contractor must pass the required examination.  Continuing education annually is also required.

Then there is the matter of using calibrated, certified testing equipment.  It is very important to use a certified testing company especially in a real estate transaction.  You want the test to be bullet proof in the event of push back from the seller/buyer of a home. You will get that if you look for the NEHA logo.
